Accused arsonist cut during botched escape
An accused arsonist attempted a jail break Friday when he scaled a razor-wire topped fence, was cut, then obeyed a guard's command to get down, said Stephen Church, superintendent of the Rockingham County Department of Corrections.
The inmate, Robert Daigle, 29, of 10 Wayland Circle, Exeter, is being held at the county jail on charges alleging arson and criminal threatening. Exeter police allege that on June 12, Daigle threw a Molotov cocktail at a pickup truck, sparking a fire that spread to a nearby mobile home.
Incarcerated on $10,000 cash bail, Daigle made the attempted jail break from within a fenced-in yard on the jail grounds, said Church. The yard is enclosed by double fences, both topped with spiraled razor wire, which Church described as "extremely unforgiving."
Daigle climbed eight feet up the innermost fence before getting cut, said the jail superintendent. In order to escape, Daigle would have had to get over two sets of razor wire, past an officer, over an electric fence, then more fencing with razor wire, Church said.
"And this whole time he was under video surveillance," Church said. "Our security measures worked 100 percent. There was zero breach."
Church said Daigle was treated for minor lacerations and returned to the jail.
Daigle faces sanctions within the county jail, while the sheriff's department investigates a possible new charge of attempted escape, Church said.
