Barbed Wire Fencing Information
Barbed wire fence installation involves setting posts into the ground that are used to support multiple strands of barbed wire. Barbed wire features two strands of wire that are twisted together with barbs consisting of two or four sharp points spaced evenly along the wire length. A simple and efficient barbed wire fence installation utilizes metal T-posts to support up to several lengths of barbed wire.
Instructions
1 Determine the course that the fence will take along a property line or boundary for livestock. Purchase T-posts and barbed wire fence for the project. Use as a rule of thumb one T-post every 10 feet and determine whether the fence will be a three or four strand, for example, to calculate the amount of barbed wire needed. Multiply the total length of the fence line by the number of strands to determine the amount of barbed wire needed.
2 Put on gloves to protect hands. Install T-posts every 10-feet. Drive the T-posts at least 2 feet into the ground with a T-post driver.
3 Choose the vertical spacing for the wire on the T-post based on the intended use and personal preference. Attach a lay down fence clip to the T-post with a clip installation tool. Place the clip in the jaws of the tool and crimp the clip securely around the T-post with the tool. Attach clips at the desired spacing along the post. Continue to the next post and install the clips at the same intervals as the previous post.
4 Attach the end of the barbed wire fence to the beginning or corner post. Wrap the barbed wire around the post and wrap 4 to 5 inches of the wire end around the main length of wire to secure it in place. Position the wire on the anchor post at the same interval as which the clips are installed.
5 Pull the fence along the entire fence line. Pull the fence tight by hooking the claw of a hammer next to a barb and pull the fence tight around an end or corner post. Position the barbed wire so it matches the spacing on the other T-posts, cut the wire with wire cutters and wrap 4 to 5 inches of the wire around itself to secure it in place.
6 Work back along each fence post and place the taught barbed wire between the tabs of the lay down clips. Slide a nail down through the hole in the top tab, across the wire and through the hole in the bottom tab. Repeat the process for each fence post.
