DIY Wall Mug Rack

Hits: 2

No matter the storage space in your kitchen, stacking mugs can take up pantry or cupboard space that you can use for other wares and appliances. A mug rack fastened to the wall can supply sturdy and convenient storage, while creating more room on shelving. Using basic tools, tailor your own mug rack to fit the dimensions and color of your wall and amount of mug storage desired.

Instructions

1
Select a wall in your kitchen that is not in a high traffic area and is near your coffeemaker to hang the mug rack. Run a stud finder along the wall to find a secure spot for installation. Mark the spots at which the stud finder beeps or flashes a light.

2
Measure the dimensions of the wall near the stud markings to determine corresponding length and width measurements to use when creating your mug rack. Mugs should be spaced about 6 inches apart horizontally and 2 inches apart vertically to prevent clanking and chipping. Cut a 1-inch thick wood board into the corresponding dimensions, such as 2-by-1 feet, using a saw.

3
Sand the wood board with 120-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface. Vacuum the sand dust off the board, and wipe the board with a tack cloth to remove remaining particles. Stain or paint the wood board in a color that matches your kitchen décor and allow it to dry, based on manufacturer’s instructions.

4
Leave 1 inch of space on all sides of the wood board for installing wall screws. Divide the length and width of the board by three, not counting the 1 inch of space allotted for installation. Mark three rows that are at least 2 inches equidistance apart vertically. Mark three to four spots that are at least 6 inches equidistance apart on the top and bottom rows. The top and bottom row marking should line up. Mark two to three spots equidistance apart and centered between the top and bottom row markings, not lining up with them.

5
Drill holes that are ½ the diameter of the screws attached to the end of the cup hooks at each spot marked. Screw the cup hooks into the holes so that the hook is pointing upward and resting against the wood board. Drill two to three holes on each side of the rack within the 1-inch installation allotment space that are ½ the diameter of the 2-inch long wall screws. Hold the mug rack against the wall at the stud finder markings. Ensure the mug rack is level, and drill the wall screws into the holes and wall to secure the mug rack in place.
