Directions to Put Together Metal Shelves
Metal shelf units are very sturdy and can hold considerable weight. They are also easy to install: You can put together a shelf kit even if you have never done it before. These types of storage units are great for use in a garage, basement or shed. The following instructions are for a unit having a "pin-and-slot" method of assembly.
Instructions

Place all of the pieces of the shelf kit on the floor close to the spot where you intend to place the unit. Arrange similar items together and make sure that none are missing.

The kit contains three lengths of metal bars. The four longest are the unit's vertical legs. Hold two of these together parallel to each other.

Place one of the smallest metal bars horizontally between the two vertical metal bars at their middle points. Insert the small pins on the small bar into the corresponding slots in the long vertical bars. Make sure the horizontal bar is in the correct slots to make it level. Gently tap the bar with a rubber mallet until the pins are firmly seated in the slot bottoms.

Place a second small horizontal bar at the tops of the vertical bars and attach it to them in the same way as described in Step 3.

Place a third small horizontal bar about two inches from the bottoms of the vertical bars, and attach it to them in the same manner as described in Step 3.

Locate the other two long metal bars included in the kit, stand them vertically and attach three short bars to them in the same manner as described in Steps 3, 4 and 5.

Install a rubber foot on the bottom of each vertical leg by sliding it onto the end and gently tapping it with the rubber mallet.

Stand up the two assembled side sections, and place one of the medium metal bars so that it is even with the tops of the two front legs. Attach the horizontal bar to the legs using the rubber mallet. Line up two more medium bars with the middle and bottom short horizontal bars, and attach them to the front legs in the same manner.

Repeat the procedure in Step 8 to attach the three medium metal bars to the back legs.

Place a shelf on each of the three layers. One shelf will rest on the top of the unit, one in the middle, and one near the bottom. No tools are necessary to install the shelves.
