How to Build My Own Wire Dog Cage

Dogs love to run around at every opportunity, but there comes a time when you need to contain them somewhere safe for transportation or health purposes. In such scenarios, a dog cage is the best place to keep them. You can buy a dog cage, but it is simple and often cheaper to build your own wire dog cage. Doing so will allow you to create a cage that is tailored to your dog.

Instructions

1 Measure the length of your dog while it is lying down and the height of it when standing. Write these measurements down on a piece of paper. You will want your dog to be comfortable inside the cage, but it should not be too big or they will not be secure while being moved. Add 3 inches to the length and height when building the cage for optimum comfort and security.

2 Buy a wooden board for use as the base of the cage. The size should be based on the dimensions of your dog. Sand the wooden board to get rid of any sharp or uneven areas. Purchase welded wire panels from your local hardware store or pet shop supplier.

3 Cut the wire panels to the desired height and length. Nail the welded wire panels onto either side of the wooden base, and a third panel to act as the back of the cage. Add another wire panel to the top of the cage using panel clamps that can be purchased. Attach a clamp at all four corners of the roof and cover it with a blanket so that the dog is not distracted and to provide an element of cover.

4 Attach a door to your dog cage. The door should be the same size as the three other sides. To hang the door, place two door hinges on one of the existing sides and attach the wire panel. Buy a latch from a hardware store so that the door can be locked and fix it to the door. Place bedding on the floor of the cage for added comfort.
