How to Build a Woven Wire Fence for Dogs
If your dog is constantly leaving your yard for greener pastures, construct a woven wire fence to keep him at home. Woven wire fences are typically constructed of fence posts and woven metal wire, such as field fence. The size, style and gauge of woven wire fencing vary, depending on the type you purchase. Some styles of woven wire are simple, like field fence, while others are more decorative and elaborate.
Instructions
1
Use a post-hole digger or a shovel to dig a hole for your first, end Woven Wire Fence post. Make the depth of the hole a third of the length of the post and the width approximately 12 inches. If your fence post is 6 feet long, your hole should be 2 feet deep.
2
Tamp down the dirt at the bottom of the hole using a tamping rod or long 2-by-4. Place the post inside the hole. Use a level to make sure the post is straight and plumb.
3
Add 4 to 6 inches of gravel to the bottom of the hole around the post. Then start re-filling the hole with the dirt you removed from it, and tamp the dirt down firmly at a couple of points as you fill the hole. Fill it until the top of the soil is even with the rest of the ground.
4
Repeat the process until you've set all of the posts for your fence.
5
Unroll the woven wire and roll the wire back on itself to flatten it. Stretch the wire along one side of your fence from one end to the other. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to bend back any pointed pieces at the end of the wire, if needed.
6
Place the end of the wire against the center of the first post. Use a level to line up the end of the wire so it is straight with the post. Staple the wire onto the post using Woven Wire Fence staples at 4 to 6 inch intervals all the way down the fence post.
7
Move to the next post. Pull the wire taut and staple it to the post. Do not leave gaps between the wire and the ground if you want your dog to stay inside the Woven Wire Fence. Repeat the process until you've attached wire to all the posts.
