How to Clean Hamster Cages

Hamster cages require a thorough cleaning at least once per week. Refusal to do so can cause the small creature to suffer from a respiratory problem or other illness due to an unclean environment. The odor that comes from a soiled hamster cage can also be unappealing to the owner. Hamster cages and accessories should be cleaned with mild detergent and disinfectant. New bedding, food, water and toys should be supplied on a regular basis. Proper cage hygiene is key for keeping a healthy hamster in captivity.

Instructions
1 Place your hamster in a safe and secure enclosure. Cleaning should never be performed when the hamster is in the cage. Ideal enclosures include a hamster ball or large plastic storage box.

2 Fill a sink with hot water and 1 tsp. of unscented dish washing detergent. Remove from the cage all nonporous objects such as a water bottle, plastic tubing, running wheel and food dish. Allow these accessories to soak in the sink while you clean the hamster cage.

3 Discard all the bedding from the bottom of the cage. Use a vacuum attachment to suck up the small particles, dust and hamster waste left on the cage's base. Use gloves when throwing soiled bedding into the trash.

4 Fill a clean bucket with hot soapy water. Immerse the cotton washcloth in the bucket and wring out the excess water. Clean the sides, base and top of the hamster cage. For tough hamster odors or stains, sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of the cage. Rinse well once the cage is thoroughly cleaned.

5 Place at least 1 inch of fresh hamster bedding evenly along the base of the cage. Hamsters require enough bedding to burrow into and nest. Rip up several paper towels and place the strips in the corner of the cage where the hamster typically sleeps.

6 Rinse, dry and replace the hamster accessories to the cage. Place the objects in the same place, as hamsters do not like change. Check the wheel to see if it squeaks. If it does, pour a drop of food-grade oil, such as vegetable, mineral or olive oil, onto a cotton swab and grease the axle.

7 Fill the water bottle with fresh water and the food dish with fresh food. Put both back into the cage. Replace any soiled chew toys with new ones. Place the hamster back into its cleaned cage.
