How to Do Decorative Etching on Metal Parts

Hits: 2

The process of etching has existed for hundreds of years. It involves using chemicals to deepen designs scratched into metal and can be as simple or as elaborate as the artist desires. Artists can use etching to decorate many different types of metal, but the most common are zinc and copper. In modern times, the etching process is much simpler, but still requires patience and skill.
Instructions
1
Sketch out your design. Some popular motifs include plants, animals, geometric shapes and words in various languages. Ensure that it works well with the scale of the metal plate.

2
Scratch your design into the coated metal plate using the needle. Push down hard enough to get through the protective top layer and score the metal underneath.

3
Pour the etching solution into the plastic tub. Ensure that you wear the gloves and mask because these chemicals are caustic. Cover all areas of the plate that you don't want etched and submerge the piece in the solution.

4
Let the piece sit, checking it often. If you remove it too quickly, the design may be fainter than desired.

5
Remove from the solution and rinse with fresh water. If desired, add the darkener to bring out the lines.
