How to Make Steel Wire Rope
How to Make Steel Wire Rope
Steel wire rope is made up of a collection of steel wires which are twisted together in a helix formation to create a strong and durable rope. It is predominantly used within the construction and manufacturing industries. There are a number of different styles of steel wire rope which differ in the way the individual wires interconnect with each other. Among these are original lay, Langs' lay, alternate lay, left-hand lay and right-hand lay.
Instructions
1 Form individual wires with the use of a series of dyes, or holes, which gradually reduce in size. This can be done either by hand or with the use of machinery. Cut the length of wire required. Cutting can be done with a circular saw.
2 Decide on the construction of the steel wire rope. The number of wires required to make up a ''strand'' depends on the purpose of the wire. A standard rope size is 6 x 19, which means there are 6 ''strands'' which are made up of 19 wires, twisted together in a helix formation. The construction has a central ''strand'' core, which is surrounded by the other ''strands."
3 Twist the collection of wires together manually or with the use of machinery. A standard rope type is the right-hand lay, where the wires which make up the ''strand'' are twisted left.
4 Twist the collection of ''strands'' together manually or with the use of machinery. The ''strands'' which make up the wire are twisted right in a standard rope type.
