How to Secure a Chain Link Fence
Chain link fences are effective barriers that can both prevent kids and pets from escaping a yard and prevent thieves and vandals from approaching a home. Fences are used as a security device for many homes and businesses, and while they do form a barrier between an area of property and anyone outside the fence perimeter, the fence itself can be compromised through cutting or climbing. Securing a chain link fence requires preparation and diligence.
Instructions
1 Install the fence a foot under the ground if possible. Pets will frequently compromise a fence by digging underneath it and the deeper the fence is in the ground, the more difficult it becomes to breach it from below.
2 Lock all fence doors with either a heavy chain and padlock or a bike lock. Locking the fence door will help prevent unauthorized people from entering or exiting through the fence but padlocks are susceptible to bolt cutting. A thick chain and a cut-resistant lock or a U-shaped bike lock that's made entirely of steel will help eliminate the concern of the lock being cut and the fence being compromised.
3 Keep the fence well-lit at night. Vandals and thieves prefer to work in darkness so they are not seen. Security lighting will deter many people from approaching the fence, climbing it or trying to damage it.
4 Install barbed wire at the top of the fence if you are concerned about people climbing over the top of the fence. Barbed wire makes it more difficult for people to climb the fence without badly injuring themselves, so makes an effective deterrent against fence climbers.
