Make a Mesh Wire Storage Bin
Wire mesh is a versatile material that can be used in sculpture, costume-making and to create bins. Wire mesh bins are excellent for storing composted materials or other non-metal objects. Instead of buying mesh wire storage bin, create your own for less and use it to compost your kitchen scraps or store your collection of fabric bows. With a few simple tools and an afternoon of free time, you can create a circular wire mesh storage bin that will meet your storage needs for years to come.
Instructions
1
Measure 13 feet of half-inch hardware cloth and cut it off from a 15-foot piece with a pair of wire cutters. Set aside the remaining 2-foot section. Lay 13 feet of half-inch hardware cloth flat on the ground or on a work table. Bring the ends together, forming the wire into a cylinder. Clamp the ends together with four evenly spaced small metal clips.
2
Secure four 4-foot tall, 2-inch thick wooden posts to the inside of the wire mesh cylinder opposite each other and evenly spaced apart. Attach each post to the inside of the cylinder with three copper wire ties.
3
Lay the 2-foot section of mesh wire on top of one of the two open ends of the cylinder. Use wire cutters to cut the mesh section so that it matches the size of the opening.
4
Secure the mesh circle in place with copper wire ties. Tie one copper wire tie around the holes in the hardware cloth at 1-inch intervals around the perimeter of the opening.
5
Flip the mesh cylinder over so that the top is open. Place items inside of the bin for storage or, place the bin outside in a corner of your yard if you are using the bin as a compost bin.
