Styles of Security Fences

There are many ways to increase your home's security, such as installing an alarm system or security bars on your windows. One of the easiest ways to secure your home, however, is to prevent intruders from accessing your property in the first place. A security fence is designed to keep individuals from entering your yard and can provide privacy as well. There are several different styles to choose from, so you should be able to find an option that meets your budget and needs.

Chain Link
One of the most common styles of security fences is chain link fencing. It usually features steel wires that are woven into a diamond-shaped pattern, so it has an open weave that preserves the views surrounding your property. As a result, a chain link fence provides a minimum degree of security and is a more budget-friendly security fence option. However, the price of chain link fencing may vary based on the gauge of wire used. To ensure that the fence is strong enough, opt for at least 9 gauge wire. It's a durable style of fencing and its open design allows it to blend in with your property without becoming an eyesore. It can have an industrial look, though, so it may not be the best option for your home.

Lattice
A lattice style security fence offers substantial privacy and security but has a more decorative look than a chain link fence. The fence is formed by laths that are overlapped to create a crisscross pattern with small openings at the intersection of the laths. Lattice style fences are typically made from wood, but a variety of materials may be used, including PVC and plastic.

Ornamental Steel
Ornamental steel fencing is one of the most decorative styles of security fences. It resembles wrought iron fencing and is placed in a picket style. However, it's much stronger and more durable than a traditional picket fence. Most ornamental steel fences are treated with a powder coat that prevents rusting and corrosion. The top portions of the posts usually feature pointed tips so climbing over the fencing is difficult. The fence may also feature a decorative design and can be custom-built to create a personalized pattern.

Barbed Wire
For a utilitarian design that provides significant security, a barbed wire fence may be the best option. The fence is composed of strong wire with barbed tips to prevent individuals from scaling the fence and trying to climb over it. As a result, individuals who try to climb over the fence risk pain and injury. Barbed wire fencing is easy to construct and relatively inexpensive. In most cases, it only requires several fence posts from which the wire is hung, and simple staples to hold it in place. This style of security fence may be better suited for rural properties that are quite large and require increased security measures.
