The Best Way to Clean a Grill Grate

Hits: 2

Dirty grill grates pose a bigger problem than just their ick factor. Food particles that are left on the grill become charred during the next grill session, and charred food is potentially more at risk of containing cancer-causing agents. The particles can contain and grow bacteria, not to mention that food left on the grill causes more food to stick. For these reasons, it's important to clean your grill before and after every use.

Instructions
1
Scrape stuck-on food off of the grates after cooking with a brass-bristled brush. Brass bristles are sturdy enough to scrape off food effectively without scratching the grates.

2
Shut the lid and turn the burners up to high (if using a gas grill) for 10 minutes. The heat will cause remaining food pieces to burn off and make your next cleaning easier.

3
Dip a sponge in a bucket of warm water and dish soap immediately before firing up your grill for your next barbecue. Use the sponge to clean the grates again, removing any leftover residue.
