The Cabinet Ideas of Spice Rack

Hits: 2

Whether you consider yourself a crafty, do-it-yourself type or simply hate to throw away items that seem re-usable, it's always a good idea to try to repurpose household goods, especially when they appear useful in a variety of ways. When brainstorming ideas for your kitchen, consider that old spice rack cabinet you've replaced. If it's just taking up space in the garage or out by the recycle bin, you can turn it into a household helper for toys, crafts and even family medications.

Toy Display
Whether you've upgraded your spice rack or are placing your spices individually in the cabinet, don't throw out the old cabinet/holder--you can repurpose it into a cool display for your children's (or your own) collectible toys. A spice rack is an ideal way to show off a collection of porcelain figurines, action figures, mini plastic dolls and animals because the racks will hold the toys in place. Further, you can clear shelf space off previously occupied by the toys by hanging the cabinet on the wall, giving the toys a place to "hang out" and be admired. To attach the spice cabinet to the wall, drill four holes through the back of the cabinet, then drill anchors to the wall and slide the screws through the cabinet holes, into the anchors. (If you don't want to disturb your walls, you can just lean the cabinet against the wall and add in the toys.)

Craft Center
Creative types know that occasionally craft supplies can get out of hand. Beads may spill, glitter can sprinkle and buttons can become jumbled. Wash out your spice jars (to make sure the odor of the jars' previous inhabitants is gone), then use the jars to hold your craft supplies. You can fill jars with a rainbow of beads or buttons, then label the lids or jars. Jars can even hold embroidery thread, loose ribbon, pins and tacks. Another benefit is the cabinet's portability--you can pick it up and take it with you to the living room, porch or backyard, wherever you intend to work on your craft project.

Medicine Organizer
Use your old spice rack as a medicine organizer. Line up medicines for the week (include vitamins to save time each morning) by sliding the pharmacy's pill bottles into the spice rack spaces. Consider assigning a separate row to each family member or denoting one row for daily medicines, one row for emergency medicines and one row for other pill containers such as aspirins or antacids (label the cabinet with the assignments). Hang the cabinet back on the wall or place it in the bathroom, family room or anywhere family members may access easily to obtain their daily medication. Caution: Do not take medications out of their original containers.
