Fix for Falling GE Freezer Baskets
The freezer basket found in your General Electric side-by-side refrigerator provides additional storage for awkward-shaped items that aren't able to fit on the shelves of the appliance, and may fall if incorrectly used. A falling basket occurs due to overloading, improper attachments or if the pins required to secure the basket in place are broken. While basic troubleshooting can keep the basket in place, the appliance may require professional service repair to eliminate the defective part.
Overloaded Items
The basket is able to hold a small number of items, and can unexpectedly fall when too many items or heavy items are stored in the basket for storage. Reducing the weight in the basket by removing some items resolves the problem, and ensures the basket's support pins do not eventually break off.
Improper Installation
The freezer's basket must be connected to the support pins located on the back of the freezer section to maintain the basket's support. The basket clicks into place when it is securely attached to the support pins, and may fall off when the basket is not on properly. The basket must be level with the supports on both sides of the freezer section to stay in place.
Broken Support
Support pins can break under the weight of an overloaded basket and require professional replacement to restore use of the basket. A professional appliance technician replaces the part for free if the appliance is under warranty; otherwise, replacement depends on the cost of the replacement part and labor.
Ice Buildup
Accumulated ice around the freezer basket can prevent the basket from connecting to the appliance's support pins. Defrost the appliance to restore use. The defrost setting can be set through the control panel on the front of the refrigerator, and runs for 30 minutes before ending the defrost cycle.
