How to Install a Stainless Steel Sink Strainer With a Fixed Post Basket

When updating the kitchen, the humble sink strainer is sometimes forgotten in the rush of glamorous new faucets and sinks. Update your sink strainer to match the new faucet's finish, or simply replace an aged, dirty or broken piece. Sink strainers can be installed in under an hour with common home repair tools. Fixed post basket strainers are an excellent option for replacements, as they come in two pieces- the strainer assembly itself, and a basket with an unmovable--or fixed--post that can be removed for cleaning.
Instructions

1
Wipe around the drain hole in the bottom of your sink with a rag dampened with rubbing alcohol. The alcohol will clean any oil and debris from the sink, allowing your putty to seal tightly.

2
Roll a snake of plumber's putty out between your fingers, and form it into a ring around the drain hole in the sink basin.

3
Insert the strainer assembly into the plumber's putty, ensuring it presses down flush with the bottom of the sink. Scrape off any plumber's putty that squishes out the sides with a putty knife.

4
Place the rubber gasket over the part of the strainer protruding underneath the sink. Tighten the lock nut onto the strainer assembly with a wrench.

5
Coat the bottom threads of the strainer with pipe thread sealant underneath the sink. Line the drain tailpiece up with the bottom of the strainer. Slide the slip nut up and over the tailpiece and tighten it to the bottom of the strainer by hand. Connect the tailpiece to the p-trap underneath the sink.
