How to Deodorize a Hamster Cage

A pet hamster is a cute and cuddly addition to any family, but the smell of its cage can be enough to stink up an entire room. Many methods just won't get rid of the stench. To truly deodorize a plastic-sided hamster cage, you must thoroughly scrub the container and all its contents. However, not just any cleaning solution will do as some commercial cleaners are toxic. This method uses simple household products that are safe and effective.

Instructions
1 Empty the hamster cage of all its contents, including food bowls and tunnels. Place any accessories in a plastic basin.

2 Put the empty cage into the bathtub or shower stall. Pour in about 2 inches of warm water and add 1 tbsp. of baking soda. Pour in 1 cup of white vinegar. Swish the solution around to mix and coat all surfaces. Let the cage soak for about 15 minutes.

3 Empty the cleaning solution out and rinse the cage. If any stains remain, make a paste of baking soda and water, and scrub the stains using the paste and a sponge. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean towel.

4 Fill the basin containing the animal's accessories about halfway with water. Add 1 tsbp. of baking soda and 1 cup of white vinegar. Let the items soak in the solution for about 15 minutes. Rinse and dry the accessories, just as you did with the cage.

5 Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda in the bottom of the cage. Refill the cage with shavings and replace the hamster's accessories and the hamster.
