How to Make a Stemware Holder

Hits: 2

Storing stemware attractively can be tricky. Storing them in a box or cupboard hides them from view while storing them upright on a bar or counter can be unstable. Making a stemware holder can solve your storage problem. The stemware holder will store your glasses inverted, protecting them from tipping over or being forgotten. If you do not have any under cabinet space available, use an open wall area in the dining room or bar area.
Instructions
1
Cut three 2-inch by 3-inch poplar strips to 23 inches with a table saw. Cut six 2- inch by 3-inch poplar strips to 12 inches.
2
Fit your router with a ½-inch rabbeting bit set to 1-inch depth.
3
Set one of the 12-inch long poplar strips with the 3-inch side facing up on a flat surface. Clamp the strip to a table on the left side of the strip. Turn the router on and run the router lengthwise along the right side of the poplar strip. Set the piece aside. Place another 12-inch long poplar strip on a flat surface, 3-inch side facing up; clamp the strip to a table on the right side of the strip. Run the router lengthwise along the left side of the strip. Set the piece aside.
4
Clamp the right side of a third 12-inch long poplar strip and run the router along the left side of the strip lengthwise. Switch the clamp to the left side of the strip, run the router along the right side of the strip lengthwise. Repeat this step for the remaining three strips of 12-inch long poplar. These will create the rack that will hold the stemware.
5
Run a bead of glue along the back of each of the poplar strips, and then attach one of the 23-inch long poplar strips with the 2-inch side facing up, to the back of the strips. Use two 2½-inch wood screws for each poplar strip to attach the back of the rack.
6
Apply a 2½-inch long bead of glue to the top of the poplar strips at both the front and back edges.
7
Sand the entire holder smooth. Remove any sawdust with a damp rag.
8
Use a rag to apply two coats of stain to the holder. Allow each coat to dry before reapplication.
