Mesh Fence Installation

Hits: 2

A mesh wire fence is a good option when security is your primary concern, not privacy. Relatively easy to install, use the mesh wire fencing to demarcate your property, contain children or pets or prevent intruders from entering the enclosed area. Attach the rolls of mesh wire fencing to wooden or steel posts inserted 24 inches deep in the ground to create a 4- to 5-foot tall fence. Depending on personal preference, use diamond-mesh wire or square knot wire.

Instructions
1
Pound stakes in the ground over the corners of the area you want to enclose and extend a length of garden string along them. Measure the string to determine the amount of mesh wire you need. Decide the spacing for line posts, which is usually between 7 and 10 feet, and mark the spots on the ground along the fence lines using powdered chalk.

2
Remove the corner stakes and string. Dig a 2-foot deep hole over the corners that are slightly wider than the posts. Also dig identical holes over the spots for line posts.

3
Mix concrete with water in a bucket until a workable consistency. Stir the mixture with a trowel and add more water to loosen the consistency, or concrete to harden it, if required.

4
Pack several inches of the prepared concrete into a corner hole and level. Enlist a helper to stand a post upright in the hole, directly over the concrete, while you pour more around it until a few inches from the top. Check that the post is erect, or adjust quickly before the concrete cures. Continue standing the remaining posts in the holes the same way.

5
Inspect the concrete in each hole to determine whether it has cured. Backfill the holes with dirt until level with the surrounding soil surface, and tamp with the back of a shovel to remove trapped air.

6
Unroll mesh wire fencing on the ground. Enlist a helper to stand it upright against a corner fence. Wrap the wire around the post and join it using 2-inch-long, 9-gauge staples inserted through a heavy-duty staple gun. Insert the staples along the top, middle and base of the fence to join the wires securely to the post.

7
Pull the mesh wire taut as you walk to the adjacent post. Position the wire against the post and secure in place using staples. Continue the process of joining the mesh wire to all the posts to enclose the space. If the wire falls short, extend it to a post and trim excess off. Join a new roll of wire to the same post and continue the procedure of extending it to adjacent posts.
