Start From Scratch

Remove everything from your storage rack before you start organizing the rack. When it is empty, use a clean cloth and soapy water to clean every shelf. If you use the rack to store food items in paper boxes or any other form of storage, where germs can easily migrate, clean the shelves to avoid cross-contamination. Wipe down any equipment or boxes that may have been in contact with food products if applicable. Moving items around that have germs on them can also cause a spread of germs or bacteria.

Store Heavy Items

Start by placing the heaviest items on the bottom shelves of the storage rack. Heavy equipment should always be stored near the bottom to stabilize the unit and make it sturdy. If you place heavy items on the top shelves of the rack, the rack is more likely to fall over due to instability. Heavy items can also be a potential danger if stored on top shelves, as people can get severely injured if items fall off the shelves. Examples of heavier items include electrical equipment, larger storage boxes, pots and pans, blenders and wooden beams.

Use Boxes

Use smaller paper or plastic storage boxes to organize and store smaller items that may be on the rack. Smaller items can include bolts and screws, paper and office supplies or spices and kitchen utensils. If you use the contents of the boxes frequently, you can leave the lid off the boxes so you can easily reach for the items needed. Use lids if the content of the paper boxes include food items or vegetable plants, so bacteria or germs do not spread.

Integrate a Labeling System

Create labels for the rack if you are storing many items on various racks. Create a label using adhesive paper stickers and a black marker. The label should be placed on the rack itself and should indicate what is being stored in that particular spot. If someone then removes an item from the rack and uses it, he or she can place the item back in the appropriate spot to keep the rack organized and keep the items stored in their proper places.
