Tips for Decorating Storage Racks

Hits: 2

Whether storage racks are large, plain metal racks designed to store many items in a pantry, basement or garage, or smaller, decorative racks meant for use in a kitchen or bathroom, they are essentially utilitarian. However, with some easy decorating tricks, you can make your storage racks attractive as well as useful.

Organize
Keeping your storage rack neat and tidy can make your rack more attractive. Sort and organize the items on the decorative rack. Donate, recycle or toss items that you don't need, are broken or belong somewhere else. Organize the remaining items on the rack by size and color. Better yet, purchase coordinating storage containers to create a cohesive look and hide the items on the rack. Baskets and plastic or canvas boxes in colors that coordinate with your décor keep your storage rack organized and visually appealing.

Hide the Shelves
If organizing the items on your storage rack into containers is impractical, you can cover the unit behind fabric panels. Measure the length and width of the storage unit, and purchase enough fabric to cover the shelves. Finish the fabric edges by folding them over and sewing or attaching with fabric glue, and attach the panels to the shelves with Velcro. Use a heavyweight canvas, duck cloth or decorator fabric for a more finished appearance.

Decorating Baker's Racks
Not all storage racks are industrial-looking, utilitarian units. Baker's racks, for example, store cooking supplies and equipment, and they often feature metal scrollwork, painted wood cabinet doors or other decorative elements. Heavily decorated storage racks don't need a lot of help to look nice. But you can use spray paint to create a custom piece to fit your décor. On smaller storage racks, use a set of café curtains or tiers to cover the lower racks.

Add Accessories
Depending on what you're storing on your racks, you can create decorative vignettes on each shelf to add to the décor. For example, if you're storing wine on the rack, display some pretty handpainted glasses on the shelf. Place a basket of colorful soaps next to a stack of hand towels, or use a set of decorative bookends to hold a line of books. Avoid adding too much clutter or anything that impedes your access to the items you're storing.
