Crafts Ideas for Copper Wire

Copper Wire is an easily obtainable, relatively inexpensive supply that can provide the basis for any number of crafts. The fun of Copper Wire crafts lies in the wire's pliability: it can be bent, molded and twisted into any variety of shapes, and it holds its form well. Copper also has a nice color and attractive sheen.

Wired Star
The wired star creatively utilizes an ordinary cookie cutter to make a hanging ornament for Christmas or general use. Using 18-gauge Copper Wire, wrap the wire around the perimeter of the star and pinch off the end at the top of it, forming a small loop from which to hang the star. Then use a lighter-gauge (such as 20 or 24) and repeatedly wrap the wire around the star, building up copper layers and giving it depth and body until the cookie cutter is completely or mostly covered.

Wire Names
In this craft, you'll use Copper Wire to spell out your or someone else's name. Use a thin-gauge, easily bendable wire and make sure the length is long enough to spell the entire name. Use your fingers or pliers to shape the name. You can also slide beads or other adornments onto the wire to give it some ornamentation. Curl the ends of the first and last letter when you are finished.

Copper Wire Candleholders
This craft is both aesthetically pleasing and practical. Take a small glass candleholder and, using a string, measure its circumference. Bend several strands of copper wire in a ring that is sized to hold the candleholder in the middle. Take another length of copper wire about 4 inches in length and curl the end to form a base, and then shape the remaining length into a leg. Attach the leg to the Copper Wire ring. Repeat this process two or three more times so that the ring is supported by the wire legs.

Copper Wire Figurines
Metal wire is sometimes used by artists or sculptors to create human-like models for portraits or sculptures. You can make a craft out of this practice by using Copper Wire to form "copper wire people." Bend lengths of wire into human form. You can use different gauges and even shades of copper wire to give the figurines variety. Make several to create a "copper wire family." If you desire, adorn them with dollar clothes or tiny accessories, like paper cut-out hats.
